(=つきとめる) to ascertain, make sure of, assure oneself of, convince oneself of, satisfy oneself of (a fact); to see (if it is true) ◆この事実は確かめたから間違いない　I have ascertained the fact―made sure of the fact―convinced myself of the fact. ◆実否を確かめなければならぬ　I must make sure of the truth―convince myself of the truth―satisfy myself of the truth. ◆実否を確かめて来よう　I will go and ascertain the truth―see if it is true. ◆実検によって確かめる　to convince oneself by personal inspection ◆実検して確かめなければ信じられぬ　I must see for myself. ◆万事間違いないことを確かめた　I assured myself that all was right―I saw that all was well. 2. (=確実にする) to confirm (a report); to corroborate (a statement); to establish (a fact); to verify (an account); to authenticate (the news) ◆これは確かめられた事実だ　This is an established fact. ◆この報道はまだ確かめられない　The report is not yet confirmed―The report wants confirmation. ◆新聞の記事を確かめる必要がある　We must verify the accounts in the papers. ◆僕の言うことを確かめる事実がある　There are facts in corroboration of my statement.
